(Gender and Democratization in the Arab Region, 2004)
Gender refers to the attributes, behaviors, personality characteristics, and expectations associated with a person's biological sex in a given culture. Gender research gradually emerged to highlight the existence of disparities in the distribution of power along biological lines and to study the culture and traditional roles, functional assignments and stereotypes of men and women. This book is a result of the Regional Workshop on Gender and Democratization in the Arab Region that took place March 11-13, 2002 in Amman, Jordan. It includes the opening remarks and a compilation of international papers and case studies presented at the workshop, in both Arabic and English. Country case studies were presented by governmental and non-governmental representatives from various countries in the region.
(Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in the Arab Region: Successes and Challenges, 2005)
The misuse and proliferation of small arms and light weapons is an international phenomenon that contributes to the economic, political and social destabilization of many countries worldwide. The Middle East region is especially significant in this regard as the stage for more than thirty percent of armed conflicts since 1945. It is also one of the major recipients of traditional arms. This book is the result of the regional conference on " The UN Program of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in all its Aspects in the Arab Region: Successes and Challenges, " that took place June 23-24, 2003 in Amman, Jordan. It includes opening remarks and conference information in addition to a compilation of regional and international papers presented at the workshop in both Arabic and English.
(Small Arms Light Weapons in The Arab Region : National and Regional Measures, 2002)
The proliferation, misuse, and illicit trade in small arms and light weapons is an issue that poses a major threat to human security because approximately half a million people are killed each year by such weapons. This book is the result of the regional workshop on "Small Arms and Light Weapons in the Arab Region: National and Regional Measures" that took place May 6-7, 2001. These papers agree on the necessity to address and tackle the problem of light weapons and suggest measures such as Arab coordination, the amendment and enforcement of the necessary legislation and the raising of awareness surrounding this issue. In addition to two briefing papers and an introduction it includes opening remarks and a compilation of regional and international papers presented at the workshop in both Arabic and English.
